Description

SR-71 Blackbird Museum Patch

The SR-71 Blackbird was the world’s fastest and highest-flying operational aircraft. SR-71s were home based at Beale AFB but deployed to many other locations for missions. In Okinawa, Blackbirds were nicknamed HABU for a local snake. SR-71A serial number 61-7958 was delivered to the USAF in December 1965. On 28 July 1976 this aircraft was used to set the World Absolute Speed Record of 2,193 miles per hour. This record is still officially recognized by the World Air Sports Federation as the fastest humans have ever flown in an aircraft. On 23 February 1990, 61-7958 was flown to Robins AFB for display at the Museum of Aviation.
